Saint Paul Minnesota Sheraton Hotel
The Minnesota Legislature has formed a new committee to proactively address homelessness in the state. The committee, a cabinet-level panel led by Lt. Governor Peggy Flanagan, has taken note and is trying to help the city of St. Paul and its homeless community solve the problem.
Legislative efforts have consistently focused on combating racial inequality and social justice initiatives, and the new committee is no different. Gomez was named chairman of the committee after addressing people at the massive homeless camps that turned up in Powderhorn Park in Minneapolis this summer.
When chaos broke out last week, volunteers approached the functioning hotel and arranged for some of the homeless residents to be housed. The hotel is operated autonomously by volunteers from the St. Paul Police Department and the Minnesota Department of Human Services.
On the first night, the team invited more than 70 people living on the Hiawatha Highway to board Metro Transit buses. After leaving their camp, they moved into the Twin Cities hotel rooms. A further 112 people were ordered to leave the streets and move to safety in a hotel room in the Twin Cities overnight.
At the same time that the state - led by efforts to house unprotected people in hotels - was arriving, a grassroots group did the same in St. Paul. Volunteer organizers moved to the Sanctuary Hotel to look after a growing camp in Powderhorn Park.
The district where most of the protests and demonstrations have taken place is Powderhorn Park, a site where camps for the unprotected have long been established. Nearby attractions include the Minnesota State Capitol, the University of Minnesota - St. Paul campus and the U of M. campus. The universities of Minneapolis and Saint Paul are about two miles apart, but they are actually in neighboring Falcon Heights. A small Greenway and Stevens Avenue Camp is not much further away; Hiawatha Camp, considered Minneapolis's largest, is just a few blocks from the Sanctuary Hotel, at the corner of Stevens and Pine Streets.
Residents have gathered to develop a plan for cohabitation and coexistence in the former Sheraton, which is managed by the University of Minnesota - St. Paul's College of Arts and Sciences and the City of Saint Paul. As someone who has been to the property before, I am curious to tell you what others have told me about it.
